AC Tips for Prepping Your Florida Home for Summer

Summer in Florida means pool parties, beach days, cold drinks, and most importantly, a working air conditioner! Now that summer is just weeks away, it’s time to prepare your home and HVAC system for the hot months ahead. But where do you begin?

Prepare for hot summer days with these AC tips from our air conditioning pros at Super Heat & Air!

Change Your Air Filters

All kinds of debris can get trapped in the air filter of your AC unit, which is why it is important to replace or clean your air filters at least every 30-60 days.

If your air filter is clogged, it will make it harder for your AC to keep your home cool and can cause undue wear and tear on your system.

Changing or cleaning your air filters should be the number one priority before the heat of summer sets in.

Pro Tip: Make a note on your calendar every 30-60 days to remind you to change or clean your filter!

Check for Leaks

Though you’re likely already using your HVAC system, before you turn it on full blast this summer, check for any refrigerant leaks. Keep in mind that refrigerant does not evaporate so if your unit is low on refrigerant, there is likely a leak or disconnection somewhere.

We recommend that you have your AC system checked before summer begins as operating an air conditioner that is low on refrigerant will lead to damage and reduced efficiency.

The last thing you want this summer is to have an AC breakdown due to an unexpected refrigerant leak!

Manage Humidity

Here in Florida, we are known for our humidity, and it is important to control the humidity levels in your home. Normal humidity levels range between 30-50%.

Control humidity levels in your home and prevent mold or mildew growth by:

  • Weather sealing all doors and windows
  • Using a dehumidifier if humidity is high
  • Running the air conditioner, even if you are going out for the day or on vacation.

Optimize AC Performance

Have your entire HVAC system inspected and cleaned by a professional at Super Heat & Air to ensure that it is running efficiently during the summer months. We will inspect the condenser unit, tighten any loose hoses and connectors, and test your thermostat to ensure everything is working properly.

If you are going away on vacation, program your AC to run periodically throughout the day, or use a programmable thermostat.

Install a Smart Thermostat

To keep the temperature and humidity levels in check in your Tampa home, consider installing a programmable or smart thermostat. These nifty devices allow you to program the temperature during certain times of the day to help increase energy efficiency.

Going to work for the day? Program your thermostat to run a few degrees higher while you’re away, and then cool down as you arrive home.
Going on vacation? Program the thermostat to keep your home at a higher but still comfortable temperature while you are away and monitor it from a simple app on your phone!

Smart thermostats are a great way to save energy while also keeping your home cool and comfortable.
